For people wanting to succeed as a photographer, there can be few things as exciting as working abroad doing what you love. If you are keen to get a foot in the door in the world of photography but also have the urge to travel and see the world, working on a cruise ship could be the perfect job for you. It will give you the chance to work and travel at the same time, whilst providing you with comfortable accommodation and rewarding career opportunities.

Duties

If you are working on a cruise ship, your main duties will involve photographing the guests and capturing their holiday in photographs. This may be whilst out on excursions or whilst you are on the ship.

Skills

You will need to have mastered a range of photography techniques to do a good job. When out and about, it’s essential that you can take good motion shots as well as group portraits. Duties on the ship could include anything from photographing guests at dinner to shooting an on-board wedding. It’s essential that you can shoot in a variety of conditions and take excellent photographs quickly in various weather conditions.

Getting the Job

To prove you have the required skills, you will need to have built up a varied photography portfolio of your work. You could present this in an album or put it up online – the second option is perhaps preferable as it’s easy to add to it over time. Make sure you are friendly, personable and professional if you are invited to an interview, as the crew will be looking for someone who can interact well with their guests.

Cruises tend to only run at certain times of the year, making it quite seasonal work. Find out when cruises run, research the companies you’d like to work for, and get in touch. You have nothing to lose.
